Introduction to Team-Based Learning: A Demo and Discussion √ § – Online Event
Date & Time
September 25, 2025, 12:00 am – 1:30 pm
Description
Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a collaborative learning pedagogical strategy that is a great way to center your classroom on active learning, get students to prepare for class, and improve student performance. It builds courses around units of instruction (modules), each of which follows a three-step sequence: preparation; readiness assurance testing, almost always performed in an individual-then-team order; and application exercises, which are the “core” of TBL. In today’s session, we’ll let you experience TBL to start, then tell you how we use it in our classes, and answer all your questions about how you can use it, too! This session will be presented by Sarah Leupen (BIOL) and John Fritz (DoIT ITNM).
This introduction to TBL will kick off an ongoing discussion group designed to provide support to faculty interested in trying or learning more about this form of active learning. The TBL discussion group will meet at least monthly throughout AY 2025-26 and will be open to all interested faculty. Meeting times TBD.
This session is co-sponsored by the Faculty Development Center and DoIT Instructional Technology and New Media.

Please note that this is a HyFlex event! Please click “Going In Person” or "Going Virtually" below to reserve your seat for this session. In addition to lunch, you'll probably enjoy learning more about TBL in
person. However, if you can only join virtually, we'll make sure you can
at least observe, and possibly participate using an Akindi hybrid quiz, which will be emailed to participants who register to attend virtually. Please email fdc@umbc.edu
if you have any questions.
Lunch will be provided to everyone who register to attend in person and also confirms their attendance a week in advance. Please email fdc@umbc.edu
to note any dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, food
allergies, etc.) by Wednesday, September 17. The deadline to register for this
event in person is the earlier of Wednesday, September 17 or when the event
reaches capacity. Please email fdc@umbc.edu
to be added to a wait list if the event is full. Please note that
funding for in person programs with lunch is limited, so we ask that you
please commit to coming upon registration and kindly release your spot
if you can no longer attend.
A Google calendar
invitation with a WebEx link will be provided to all participants
registered to attend online the day before the session.
