UMBC’s Department of Theatre presents Voracious by Susan McCully, directed by Nyalls Hartman.
Voracious is a farcical comedy about the very serious quest for perfection and finding one’s own pleasure. Chef Jean-Jacques is obsessed with getting a 4-star review for his restaurant, Chez Rachel. Suzanne Falmagne, an impossible-to-please restaurant critic, arrives to sample the menu, and the staff snaps into action. Unfortunately, the woman identified as the critic is actually Joanie, an amateur critic pretending to be Suzanne. At the bar sits Ceely, a vegetarian who has developed an unsettling and insatiable hunger for Jean-Jacques’ blood sausage. As Lawrence, Joanie’s long-suffering boyfriend, begs for her attention, the real Suzanne storms into the restaurant looking for her missing girlfriend, Ceely. Chaos ensues while the stalwart waitress, Louise struggles to keep the pace and the peace. Suzanne falls for Joanie. Lawrence discovers a kindred spirit in Louise, and Ceely learns the truth—Jean-Jacques is really Rachel. No wonder Ceely has fallen in love her vegetarian Boudin Noir.
