inHALE

inHALE is a collective of flutists with a mission to seek out exciting and adventurous duo repertoire that utilizes each member of the flute family (piccolo, flute, alto flute, bass flute). Through direct contact with composers, inHALE searches for music that elevates the duo from its pedagogic status to the concert stage. With active commissioning, inHALE will augment the repertoire for the entire flute family. Each member of the collective is a strong exponent of the contemporary flute and have, between them, premiered over 250 new works while building a new generation of repertoire. For this event, UMBC’s Lisa Cella will be joined by Carrie Rose in concert.

A champion of contemporary music, Lisa Cella has performed throughout the United States and abroad. She is Artistic Director of San Diego New Music and a founding member of its resident ensemble NOISE. With NOISE, she has performed the works of young composers all around the world, and is co-artistic director of NOISE’s annual festival of modern music entitled soundON. Cella co-founded the flute collective inHALE, a group dedicated to developing challenging and experimental repertoire for two and three flutes. inHALE was an invited ensemble at the National Flute Association Convention in San Diego in August of 2005. She, along with Franklin Cox, is a founding member of C2, a touring flute and cello duo. As a soloist, she has performed both nationally and internationally and is a faculty member of the Soundscape Festival of Contemporary Music in Maccagno, Italy and Nief Norf based in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her undergraduate work was completed at Syracuse University and she received a Master of Music degree and a Graduate Performance Diploma from Peabody Conservatory. She received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in contemporary flute performance  at the University of California, San Diego. Her main teachers include John Oberbrunner, Robert Willoughby, and John Fonville. She is an associate professor of music at UMBC and a founding member of its faculty contemporary music ensemble, Ruckus.

Carrie Rose is a flutist, composer, and teacher in the Washington, D.C. area. She is producer, composer, and performer for the Origins Concert Series in Silver Spring, Maryland—a hub for adventurous music seekers that features a world premiere of her compositions on each concert. The series, in its sixth season, is supported by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. Her work has also received numerous grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, and the American Composers Forum. Rose has given solo flute performances in New York City and contemporary music workshops at several universities. Her new music CD, Books of Flutes, released by 11 West Records, features solo and ensemble music and was broadcast it in its entirety by WMUA in Amherst, Massachusetts. In DC’s City Paper, she was named a “favorite local composer.”  In addition to the premiers at the Origins Concert Series, her compositions have been featured at the University of the District of Columbia and Goucher College, played by the District of Columbia Youth Orchestra, and performed at Strathmore Mansion. Rose earned Master and Bachelor of Music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Joshua Smith, principal flutist of the Cleveland Orchestra. She teaches flute in her private flute studio in Takoma Park, Maryland, and general music classes at the Oneness-Family School, an international peace academy in Bethesda, Maryland.
