How do you deal with "loafers" and "dominators"?

Location

Date & Time

Description

How do you make sure your students are on task and learning what you want them to learn from small group activities? How do you deal with “loafers” and “dominators,” and what if students complain that they “hate group work”? Should you grade or otherwise incentivize student participation in group work, and if so, how?

For Bring Your Best Idea sessions, we (locally) crowdsource answers to questions such as these. Please bring your best ideas for having students work in small groups to this lively, collaborative, and fast-paced sharing session. At the beginning of the session, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the theme and write a brief description of a problem or a strategy related to the theme. Anyone who has an idea to share with the whole group will have two minutes to describe it. No slides please, though a one-page handout to pass around is welcome. After 20-30 minutes of sharing ideas, we’ll shift to Q&A and discussion. Whether or not you bring an idea to share, you’ll leave this session with new food for thought and several new ideas you might try in your own course. Lunch is provided.

Lunch will be provided to all registered participants, please click “Going” below to reserve your seat for this session. Please email fdc@umbc.edu to note any dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, food allergies, etc.) by Tuesday, February 19.  The deadline to register for this event is the earlier of Tuesday, February 19 or when the event reaches capacity.  Please email fdc@umbc.edu to be added to a wait list if the event is full.  If you have registered and find that you can no longer attend, please kindly release your spot so that others may attend.
