This panel explores how social scientists can connect with media outlets and talk to the press -- whether to promote your research or to serve as experts for public commentary.
Faculty panelists Tom Schaller (POLI) and Kimberly Moffitt (LLC) will be joined by Catalina Dansberger-Duque, UMBC’s Communications Manager for the social sciences and humanities, to provide advice and share their experiences.
Topics will include: understanding media cycles, how to speak in a timely and relevant way about current affairs, accessing different media outlets (e.g. social media, newspaper, TV, radio), writing an op-ed and other formats, how to pitch your research for a general audience, avoiding potential pitfalls, and the benefits of media engagement for your career.
Panelists will speak for around 45 minutes, followed by Q&A. Light refreshments provided. Please RSVP as “going” below for an accurate headcount.
Sponsored by the Center for Social Science Scholarship.
