In Francoism’s Patrimonial Persons: Poor Devils, Their Eves, and Hegemonic Masculinities, Hogan identifies the femme fatale of classic Azcona-Berlanga-Ferreri noir comedies (1958-63), who, in these narratives, is responsible for the “poor devil’s” suffering and loss of self-determination. Portrayals of the wife or new head of the household as tyrant allowed oppositional filmmakers to critique the nation’s dictator, Francisco Franco (1939-75), by using but also problematically confirming the regime’s own sexist language and ideology during the years of film censorship.
