UMBC's Asian Studies Program, the Department of History, and the Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication are pleased to welcome Mary Popeo, of Peace Culture Village, for a virtual lecture: "Inspired by the Hibakusha: How Hiroshima's Youth Are Carrying the Survivors' Legacy Into the Future."
Mary is co-founder of PCV, a youth-led peace education nonprofit dedicated to creating a sustainable peace culture through peace education, social entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment. After graduating from Boston College, she became a youth organizer and anti-nuclear weapons activist in both Boston and Japan, where she worked with groups such as the American Friends Service Committee, Global Zero, Japan New Women's Association, and Japan Council Against A & H Bombs. Mary has also worked at Harvard University, Center for Strategic and International Studies, and Showa Boston Institute for Language and Culture. She moved to Hiroshima in 2016 to co-found PCV and spent three years managing PCV's ecovillage in the countryside. She now lives in Hiroshima City, where she and the PCV team design Hiroshima-based learning experiences for thousands of people every year.
September 21 marks the 40th annual International Day of Peace. Established by the United Nations in 1981, the Day of Peace strengthens the ideal of global peace through 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire.
