UMBC Symphony Orchestra with The Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet

The UMBC Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Nell Flanders, is joined by Latin Grammy Winner The Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet for a concert featuring a selection of tangos by Astor Piazzolla and Pedro Giraudo arranged for orchestra and tango quartet, Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera's Estancia Dances, and Beethoven’s glorious 7th Symphony.   

The Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet. Widely acknowledged as one of the most compelling tango ensembles today, the quartet is moving forward in the giant footsteps of Astor Piazzolla, taking this musical genre into new territories. With immense respect for its roots and rich musical past, the ensemble serves as an active ambassador of tango and a proponent of its evolution. The quartet’s fervent and virtuosic musical style organically combines elements from Argentine tango, European classical music, and American jazz, bringing jazz and classical influences to the form while retaining all the lushness and beauty that characterizes the genre.

The UMBC Symphony Orchestra performs orchestral literature from the 18th to the 21st centuries including both standard repertoire and contemporary works, from a broad range of musical styles. Membership is open to all UMBC students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the local community by audition, with preference given to qualified UMBC students.
