Ibram X. Kendi to speak at 28th annual MLK Convocation
New York Times bestselling and National Book Award-winning author Ibram X. Kendi will speak at Loyola University Maryland's annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Convocation on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, at 7 p.m. The convocation, “Uprooting Racism and Inequality: Antiracist Educator and Scholar Ibram Kendi in conversation with Karsonya Wise Whitehead,” will be livestreamed.
Kendi will discuss “How to Be an Antiracist” and other significant actions to uproot racism in a conversation moderated by Karsonya Wise Whitehead, Ph.D., associate professor of communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola and founding Director of the Karson Institute for Race Peace and Social Justice (https://www.loyola.edu/join-us/karson-institute). Dr. Whitehead is an alum of LLC and hosts the important and regionally popular talk show "Today with Dr. Kaye" on WEAA (88.9) 3-5pm daily (https://www.weaa.org/programs/today-drkaye#stream/0).

Coffee and Convo, presented by the Karson Institute
On Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, from 7 - 9 p.m., Karsonya Whitehead, Ph.D., associate professor of communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola will host a virtual Coffee and Convo where students, staff, administrators, and faculty can drop in to discuss Dr. Kendi’s research on antiracism; the presidential inauguration and the future of democracy; and, what does it mean to work for inequality, injustice, and racial inequity. Participants will be invited to brainstorm solutions via breakout rooms before rejoining the whole group to share plans on effecting change on our campus and beyond. Space is limited, and registration for the Coffee and Convo is required.

Virtual MLK Tribute
On Thursday, Jan. 28, Loyola will cohost a virtual event with Saint Louis University and the University of San Francisco to honor the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Starsky D. Wilson of the Children’s Defense Fund, will be the keynote speaker. More information on the virtual tribute can be found on the Saint Louis University website.

About the MLK Convocation
The Martin Luther King, Jr., Convocation, celebrating its 28th year, is an occasion for Loyola and the Baltimore community to launch the spring semester and the New Year by coming together for shared inquiry into the issues of social justice, politics, spirituality, and the legacies of race and racial justice in America. The Convocation, which is sponsored by Loyola University Maryland’s office of equity and inclusion, is a signature event for the University. Past speakers have included Octavia Butler, Spike Lee, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Roxane Gay.
